Moyosore Martins / debut New York Solo Exhibit

New York, NY (Wednesday, May 17, 2023) - Móyòsóré Martins: The Artist Journey, the highly anticipated pop-up solo exhibition at Crossing Art, located at 559 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011, launches on Thursday, May 25th from 6-8 pm.  The exhibition will run through July 15th, 2023, and will feature an immersive exhibition including paintings, sculptures, and personal objects to express the artist’s unique vision.

In Móyòsóré Martins: The Artist Journey the narrative presented is Martin’s own journey and his internal conversation about his process and growth as an artist, both creatively and professionally. In his signature style of raw and layered impasto, he uses mixed media of oil, acrylic, graphite, collage, and  juxtaposed bright and somber color palettes. The surfaces scratched and distressed with scribbled words, messages, thoughts and his distinct iconography on canvas—uniquely his own.

Martins details his challenges, victories, peaks, and valleys; his narrative is true to himself and his own authentic experiences in his journey, which results in a universal understanding for the viewer.  His abstract expressionist and figurative style and narrative dive deeply into his West African Yoruba roots, and equally so with his contemporary pop-culture influences of today.

Cultural moments, raw details, and personal iconography narrate each painting in Móyòsóré Martins: The Artist Journey, which will be the third solo exhibit in the US for the New York City-based Nigerian artist since he migrated to the US in 2015 to pursue his dreams as an artist—and his inaugural New York City exhibition!

Moyosore Martins exalts the tradition of the abstract expressionist painters—the beginning,'' said Asher Edelman, celebrated art collector and financier. “Figurative and conceptualist elements then take the stage. Hatching, hard-handed distress brings the work together in harmony and depth—Moyosore’s own total.”
