DAVIES AND STARR Check out Dahlias – a teaser of what is to come by the legendary New York-based photography studio Davies and Starr who have joined our family for representation. You’ll see more soon! Still life photography is a blast! Especially if you are Davies and Starr. Wrap up your subject (object) with a great creative point of view, perfected lighting and styling, along with a special brand of cleverness from Davies and Starr and tada… you have a fresh view of something you have seen far too many times before. Next…it moves (motion graphics), it grooves (great music curation), it comes to life and ends with a good punch line. Chalkie Davies and Carol Starr, the duo behind the renown photo studio Davies and Starr, started their collaboration as Rock n Roll photographers in the late 70’s, shooting top tier artists like Elvis Costello, Pete Townshend, The Pretenders, David Bowie, and Pink Floyd. They settled in New York City in teh mid 80’s and have been the go-to still life photography studio ever since. Having worked with just about everyone at one point or another, no job is too big or too difficult. It’s the challenge that makes it all the more fun. From the most sumptuous stack of garments (anyone working in fashion knows the challenge) to bringing life and effervescence to the most simple of objects, creating illusions with lighting tricks and, in general, weaving dreams and puns. Their distinctive fresh style embodies their quick Brit humor. Career highlights include working closely with Steve Jobs at Apple (a worthy story to hear over coffee) and stepping in for Irving Penn for Clinique. In a “what’s next” creative kind of way, their Still Life work has evolved further into Still LIfe Motion, embodying all the aspects that we love and know with their overall cleverness as creative directors. Meanwhile, The National Museum of Wales will be presenting an expansive retrospective of their Rock n Roll photographs in 2015.
