Chalkie Davies and Carol Starr formed Davies+Starr in 1979 primarily to produce Record Sleeves and promotional material for Rock Bands. Over the next decade the duo produced a great number of sleeves for numerous clients including Elvis Costello, Pete Townshend, The Specials, The Pretenders, Pink Floyd, Elton John and David Bowie. During this time they also helped start the magazines The Face and Arena. They started still-life work in 1982 and in 1988 after a decade of non-stop work and worldwide travel they settled in New York to open the Davies and Starr Studio. Having grown tired of the extensive travel and inconsistencies of the music business they decided to stop shooting people and concentrate solely on Still-Life Photography.
Over the next twenty years they expanded their operations to a factory like studio in New York’s Soho district with the ability to work on as many as six sets simultaneously, using high end digital cameras and computers. Their ability to photograph anything from a lipstick to a car meant that they were able to work for Clients as diverse as Apple and Clinique, The Gap and Donna Karan. The studio emerged over the years to utilize the efforts of a dozen people working together as a team, and they produced a great many still-life images a week. This meant they were able to satisfy the still life needs of dozens of magazines in every field of publishing.
The New York Times once said of them, “they have the ability to make the average look awesome and the mundane look marvelous.” They have been the recipients of numerous awards. Fast forward to now, their well tuned photo machine has transformed into a multi-format and more streamlined operation. This allows them the luxury of spending more time on commercial projects and they have also achieved their long term goal of making their still images move. These motion videos open the creative process even further as they are now able to combine creative direction and music curation with their signature precision photography, accompanied of course by their special strain of humor.
The Davies and Starr team are highly skilled and work from conception to final product, and enjoy thoughtful service to clients like Moss, Chobani, St. Regis Hotel Group, Timberland, Tory Burch and more.
In 2015 the National Museum of Wales is presenting Chalkie’s early Rock and Roll photography as well as Davies and Starr’s iconic portraits in a much anticipated Retrospective.
