VARVARA ROZA GALLERY presents the artist’s first solo exhibition in London October 2 - October 20 ,2025
8 Duke Street, St. James’s, London, SW1Y6BN
Varvara Roza Galleries and TRAFFICARTS are proud to present the first UK solo exhibition of internationally acclaimed artist Britt Boutros-Ghali; a seminal figure in postwar abstraction whose practice spans more than six decades.
Born in 1937 in Svolvær, Norway, BRITT spent her earliest years in the shadow of World War II. Her visual language is profoundly shaped by the dramatic light shifts and nature of the north. She has since devoted her entire life to radical self-expression, producing powerful and emotive large-scale canvases that merge gestural abstraction with cultural resonance in a near-obsessive pursuit of beauty.
Since the 1970s, BRITT has made Egypt her home, dividing her time between her studios in Cairo and the North Coast, near Alexandria. Her presence and practice have left a lasting mark on the country’s artistic and cultural landscape.
Drawing upon the traditions of action painting and colour field abstraction, her works are deliberately enigmatic, inviting viewers into a space of openness and possibility, where imagination can take flight. As she has expressed: ‘I don’t want to paint suffering, there’s too much of that in the world already. I want the paintings to be healing’.
From her debut exhibition in Paris in 1962 to the present day BRITT has built an impressive legacy, recognised with numerous accolades. In 1996, she was awarded the St. Olav’s Order, Norway’s highest artistic honour, previously bestowed upon Edvard Munch. In 2010, she was awarded the Slovak Presidential Order for Art and Culture, and in 2023, the Egyptian National Council for Women honoured her with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in the Arts, cementing her role as one of the most important abstract painters in the Middle East. Her works are represented in major public and private collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in Egypt, the Queen Noor Museum of Modern Art in Amman, Jordan, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arab Art, Qatar, Museum of Art and Industry in Norway, Hardanger and Voss Museum in Norway and the Collection of the Church of Bavaria in Germany to name just a few.
A vivid example of her practice is the celebrated Women of My World series, where layers of explosive colour, mixed media, and light embody feminine strength, spontaneity, and physicality. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter the work of an artist whose vision is at once deeply personal and universally resonant.
