30 Years: The Wild Horses of Sable Island
Venice Biennale, 2026
Roberto Dutesco is a New York-based photographer, filmmaker, and explorer whose work serves as a bridge between the raw power of the natural world and the delicate complexities of human consciousness. For over thirty years, Dutesco has been the preeminent documentarian of the wild horses of Sable Island, a narrow, shifting crescent of sand in the North Atlantic.
His career is defined by a deep, visceral connection to his subjects. Through his lens, the horses of Sable Island are transformed from mere animals into symbols of resilience, love, and ancient alliance. His long-term project—spanning thousands of photographs and an award-winning feature film—captures a world that exists without human interference yet remains entirely at the mercy of human-driven environmental shifts. Born in Bucharest and established in the heart of New York City,
Dutesco’s work has been exhibited globally, inspiring a call to action for the preservation of the Earth’s remaining wild spaces. His mission remains singular: to change the way we see the beauty before us, forcing a reconsideration of our responsibility to the future.

The Geometry of Resilience: From Sable Island to Venice
3.3 feet. That is the average elevation of Sable Island. It is also the average elevation of Venice.
In the vast expanse of the North Atlantic, situated some 300 km from the coast of Nova Scotia, Sable Island sits upon this precarious threshold. Here in Venice, we stand upon that same line. This exhibition brings together two worlds — one of wild, salt-misted dunes and one of storied stone canals — linked by a shared vulnerability.
My photographs of the wild horses of Sable Island are a testament to a “lost world” that still breathes. They are a vestige of beauty, fragility, and love, captured before the inevitable rise of the tide. For the horses, there is no inland safety; for us, there is no world but this one. I invite you to see these images not merely as documentation, but as a mirror. The resilience, stamina, and vitality of these creatures are the very qualities we must summon to protect our shared future.
This exhibition is my homage to the horse, as seen through the wild horses of Sable Island, and a dedication to horses everywhere. My mission is not to be a conservationist, but to make you see — and think — differently about the beauty that remains before it slips beneath the blue.
